Ian Watkins: Parents reveal ‘overwhelming’ heartache at singer son’s depravity

The devastated parents of Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins have spoken of their horror at their son’s crimes against children.

Church minister John Davies, 53, and his wife Elaine, 60, say they are struggling to understand what turned their son from a straight-A pupil raised in a Baptist manse in Pontypridd to a paedophile whose dark sexual desires knew almost no boundaries.

“This is so hard. It’s overwhelming. It has affected every aspect of our lives,” Mr Davies told the Daily Mail.

“It’s the first thing a parent asks themselves – where did we go wrong? What happened?

“Ian was loved, cherished, encouraged and nurtured. We did our best. He was a normal happy young lad who grew up in the Valleys in a loving family which had no more problems than anybody else has.”

On Tuesday, Watkins admitted sickening sexual offences against children , including the attempted rape of a baby. Now police say they are appealing for potential victims around the world to come forward.

“I don’t know how this will turn out. I don’t know whether he will be remembered for years to come as somebody infamous and evil – like a sort of Jimmy Savile character. I hope not,” said Mr Davies.

“I hope something will happen to change that perception of people. Time will tell. We’re going to do our best to support him and hope for the best, that’s all we can do.”

Watkins, 36, was born in Merthyr Tydfil and later brought up in Pontypridd.

His natural father died when he was five and his mother married Mr Davies three years later.

The family say Watkins was never pressured into being religious, but quietly encouraged with his school work and passion for singing.

He excelled at both, achieving top grades at Hawthorn High School in Pontypridd, before getting first class honours in a graphic design degree.

He was famous for claiming to shun drink and drugs even when his band hit stardom but in Cardiff Crown Court it was revealed how he had become a “determined and committed paedophile” who also wanted to give children crack cocaine.

But as a boy, he practised music in his parents’ garage with his friends and went on to sell 3.5million albums with Lostprophets.

But today, an ex-girlfriend claimed he began confiding in her his horrific fantasies of abusing children in 2008.

And the police watchdog is now investigating whether more could have been done to stop Watkins sooner.

There are worrying posts on message boards which seem to suggest Watkins’ paedophile tendencies were widely known, at least among fans.

His parents said they were stunned to hear the charges against him. His mother, who had a kidney transplant two years ago, is in serious ill health, exacerbated by the stress of finding out about his crimes.

“When the CPS spoke and the clerk read out the allegations, Elaine and I just sat there and our jaws dropped. We could not believe what we were hearing,” said Mr Davies.

“It was devastating. We thought, ‘There must be some mistake here. There must be some reason for this. There’s no way that this is true’.

“We just left the magistrates’ court in a state of absolute despair and shock.

“Although no family is perfect, there is nothing we can put our finger on. This has just horrified all of us.”
