I didn’t rape girl in woods, says Lib Dem: Former MP emphatically denies allegation he was member of VIP paedophile ring
- Esther Baker, 32, waived her right to anonymity to allege the politician was in a group who abused young girls at beauty spot in Staffordshire
- But high-profile Lib Dem politician has emphatically denied the claims
- Described claims as ‘completely bonkers’ and said ‘I am not a paedophile’
- Staffordshire Police confirmed it is investigating Miss Baker’s allegations
A former Liberal Democrat MP yesterday emphatically denied claims he repeatedly raped a child in woods as part of a VIP paedophile ring.
Esther Baker, 32, waived her right to anonymity last week to allege the politician was in a group whose influential members routinely abused young girls at the Cannock Chase beauty spot in Staffordshire as police officers in uniform stood guard.
Yesterday the high-profile Lib-Dem furiously denied the allegations and suggested he could be the victim of a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Miss Baker, who works as a cashier, has given 33 hours of ‘graphic and detailed testimony’ to Staffordshire Police detectives about the alleged abuse, which is said to have started when she was six and lasted until she was around 11.
The cashier believes she was also sexually abused by a judge and a peer as well as other members of society’s elite.
She said that, on average, she was taken to Cannock Chase around once a month by a relative. She claims she would sometimes be raped by several men in one night in the woodland there.
Staffordshire Police has confirmed it is investigating Miss Baker’s ‘very serious’ allegations.
The former MP was not identified in either the television or newspaper interviews Miss Baker gave after waiving her anonymity, but his name has been circulating in media circles ever since.
Yesterday he said police were right to investigate the allegations but emphatically denied that he was Miss Baker’s abuser, describing the claims as ‘completely bonkers.’
He added: ‘I am not a paedophile, I’ve not committed criminal offences.’
The politician claimed Miss Baker, who now lives in Liverpool, was being ‘manipulated’ by third parties who were ‘driving an agenda’ against him.
He added: ‘This is all a fabrication and this sort of activity undermines the real victims of sexual abuse.
‘Putting the allegations into the public domain in some detail in itself makes a prosecution more difficult, I think. It makes me wonder what their motivations are.’

He said he had gone to the police after discovering he was being linked to the allegations in April, but said officers had not approached him before or since with any specific allegations.
The former MP continued: ‘I think they’ve picked a name at random. I think there is an attempt to pervert the course of justice going on.’
He said he had ‘no connection’ with the Cannock area and was working in London at the time of the allegations in the 1980s and suggested Miss Baker may have confused him with her real abuser.
Asked about the politician’s claims, Miss Baker insisted he had raped her, adding: ‘It went on for five years. I’m not likely to have confused him with anyone else.
‘My school records apparently document that I told a teacher about this at the time, although I didn’t name him as I didn’t know who he was back then.
‘Why would anyone manipulate me into making false allegations against him? I look forward to the legal system taking its course.’
Miss Baker’s alleged abuser is among more than 1,400 suspects, including 76 politicians and 135 celebrities, under police investigation for alleged historic abuse going back decades.
She said she was one of a number of children who would be abused by a group of seven or eight men, accompanied by up to five police officers who would stand guard.
She recognised one of the officers from the church she attended with her highly-religious family, and said occasionally some of the officers joined in with the abuse.
On one occasion, when she ran away, one of the officers caught her and carried her back to the woods – but told her that he was ‘sorry’ for what was happening, she said.
Miss Baker said she spoke out after losing faith in the much delayed inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, launched by the Home Secretary, and to encourage other victims or witnesses to come forward.
Staffordshire Police is in the early stages of its investigation. The force has refused to confirm or deny whether it had received an allegation of perverting the course of justice in relation to Miss Baker’s claims.
Assistant Chief Constable Jon Drake said: ‘Anyone who has been involved in criminal offences will be investigated to provide justice for the victim.’
