A woman who dabbled in black magic has been cleared of helping her husband to drown their dog in the bath because they believed it was possessed by evil spirits following a Ouja board session.
Margaret Carroll, 60, of Consett, County Durham, has had the case against her dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service shortly before she was due to appear in court.
She is currently serving a four-year jail sentence in HMP Low Newton, in County Durham, for starting a fire at the family home in an attempted suicide bid following another Ouija board session.
Pensioner Margaret Carroll, 60, (pictured left) of Consett, County Durham, has had the case against her dropped after she was accused of helping husband Paul Carroll, 51 (right) drown the family dog
A court heard Caroll was charged with failing to carry out a duty of care to an animal after her husband Paul Carroll drowned Molly, the couple’s Bedlington terrier, in the bath on Christmas Eve – following a Ouija board session where he claims he was told the terrier was possessed by evil spirits.
Paul Carroll told a court he had put Molly’s dismembered remains down the drain at the back of his home after fearing the remains would be spotted.
Troubled Paul, 51, was banned from keeping animals for 10 years and handed an 18-week jail term, suspended for a year, for the horrific incident.
Carroll’s daughter Katrina Livingstone (pictured) was jailed alongside her mother for setting fire to the family home on January 31
His wife was alleged to have run the bath to allow her husband to drown Molly.
Just days after her husband was handed the suspended sentence the 60-year-old and her daughter Katrina Livingstone took a cocktail of pills before setting fire to their home.
Livingstone’s dogs had been seized by the RSPCA following Carroll’s sentence.
The failed suicide bid followed yet another alleged Ouija board session on January 31.
However, after the blaze began to take hold the pair had a change of heart and were found outside the property when emergency services arrived.
A court heard the property was damaged to such an extent it would need to be demolished, and their neighbours were forced to move house.
Carroll and Livingstone both admitted arson reckless to whether life was endangered.
Judge Peter Kelson QC sentenced the pair to four years in custody each, with two years extended licence.
Carroll, 60, has been cleared of aiding and abetting the failure of carrying out the duty of care to an animal, and given a six-month conditional discharge for obstructing a constable.
